In this three-hour presentation addressing digital and social media ethics you'll get an overview of the issues related to the web visibility of psychotherapists on Social Media. Dr. Kolmes will discuss the different approaches to personal vs. professional online activities and look at research on client and therapist extratherapeutic encounters online. You'll be presented with a broad introduction to different social media sites with specific tips to protect one's privacy and go further in addressing the balance between personal and professional use. The APA Psychology Ethics Codes will be reviewed, particularly as they pertain to our behavior on the Internet. All participants will receive a copy of Dr. Kolmes's Social Media Policy along with tips for constructing your own for your own practice.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify 3 ethical challenges that may arise from engaging in activities on the Internet and social media.
2. Describe the findings of 2 studies that have been done on psychotherapist and psychotherapy patients finding one another's online information.
3. Provide 2 considerations for how a social media policy can address potential issues with clients.
Bio:
Keely Kolmes, Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist in California. They started their private practice in 2008, following six years as a Staff Psychologist at Vaden Health Center at Stanford University. They write, do research, and provide consultation and training on clinical and ethical issues related to social networking and technology. Their Private Practice Social Media Policy has been adapted internationally, across disciplines by tens of thousands of clinicians.
Dr. Kolmes served for seven years on the California Psychological Association’s Ethics Committee, finishing their term as Chair in 2019. They were elected for two terms as CPA’s Council Representative at APA. They are a Fellow of APA Division 42, Psychologists in Independent Practice. They are the recipient of the 2018 Janet Hurwich Award for Leadership and Advocacy for founding the non-profit Bay Area Open Minds to support diversity in gender and sexual expression. They also co-authored the book The Paper Office for the Digital Age with Ed Zuckerman in 2016.
CPA is cosponsoring with the Alameda County Psychological Association (ACPA). The California Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CPA maintains responsibility for this program and its contents.
