Course Description: 3 CE Units

Chronic pain and other somatic symptoms, trauma history, and identity factors interplay with one another but are frequently misunderstood by medical systems of care and mental health providers. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to ways of thinking about somatic symptoms in light of trauma and cultural models of understanding, as well as modalities of treatment that practitioners who even possess little knowledge of chronic pain can safely use in their practices.

About the Presenter:

Margaret M. Clausen, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Berkeley, California where she specializes in the treatment of trauma, addiction, and somatic distress. She is affiliated with the Chronic Pain Program at Kaiser Permanente – San Francisco, and with the Commonweal Cancer Help Program in Bolinas. In addition to providing psychotherapy and consultation, Dr. Clausen enjoys writing, teaching, and supervision. She is working on a book of

essays regarding psychotherapy practice. She can be reached at

www.drmargaretmclausen.com.
